What causes this black dark area on top of a crown and how can it be solved?

What is the cause?

Teeth that are covered and had a root canal sometimes turn very dark in color with time. Most often the black you see is a mix of the gum in that area that recessed and the black tooth . Sometimes the gum is so thin that it appears darker because of the black tooth underneath.

What are the solutions?

This common esthetic concern is fixed most of the time with a gum graft that thickens that area and hides the black tooth. Sometimes, we will need to whiten the black tooth or change the crown.
